Energy Cities 2016

Energy Cities’ 2016 Annual Conference of The Covenant of Mayors

Six months after COP21 and right in the middle of Green Week 2016, The Covenant of Mayors will take stock of energy and climate policies at local, national and international scales. The Energy Cities’ Annual Conference will be held on June 1-3, 2016 in Bornova (Izmir), Turkey.

Universal access to secure, sustainable and affordable energy services for all, social inclusion, local renewable energy sources, energy-water nexus, resource-efficiency…these are but a few missions that cities in European Member States have in common with Turkish cities. Managing resources while addressing economic and demographic challenges is particularly critical along the highly urbanized Mediterranean coast.

The international urban agenda is on a new track since the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals last autumn and the Paris climate agreement in December. At last, the energy transition is recognised as a global goal by the international community. To make change happen now, we need to design new solidarities between States, regions, cities, rural and urban areas, but also between people. More than ever it is time to work together for the common good and to strengthen leadership where it is the most needed: at the sub-national level.

Right in the middle of Green Week 2016, we propose a 3-days conference in the Turkish city of Bornova (Izmir). It will ignite curiosity and inspire action to accelerate the energy transition. Stunning examples from European and Turkish cities will demonstrate innovative practices in:

• low-carbon planning
• civic participation
• energy and water democracy
• smart approaches
• nature-based solutions
• mobility and buildings, and
• new economic models.

The New Covenant of Mayors on climate and energy and its progressive extension to all five continents encompasses a number of those topics while providing the framework for collaboration between all political levels.

Be part of Energy Cities’ biggest Annual event to get political updates and share practical, innovative experiences with peers. The conference will bring together several hundred policy-makers and practitioners engaged in the energy transition.

Considering its rapid development, Turkey is a particularly interesting spot to discuss the transformation of urban landscapes. The Municipality of Bornova, located in Izmir metropolitain area, the third largest city of the country, is one of the oldest, but also dynamic and young populated local authorities of Turkey. Bornova joined our network in 2011 and is active in our Board of Directors since 2013. The city’s Sustainable Energy Action Plan has been completed with a 25% percent CO2 emission reductions target. Bornova, one of our six member cities in Turkey, was the first city in the country to participate in the ENGAGE campaign.

More information on the conference programme will be released in the coming months on its official website: www.energy-cities.eu/Bornova-Izmir-2016-Turkey
